The most common cause of hair loss in men - and a frequent cause in women - is androgenetic alopecia, better known as male- or female-pattern hair loss. It's driven largely by DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a hormone that gradually shrinks hair follicles over time, leading to thinning, a receding hairline, or a widening part.
Genetics play a big role, which is why pattern hair loss often runs in families. The good news: because the process is gradual, starting treatment early gives you the best chance to keep the hair you have.
