A therapist (psychologist, counselor, clinical social worker and similar) delivers talk therapy - structured conversation and evidence-based techniques like CBT - but does not prescribe medication. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor specializing in mental health who can diagnose conditions and prescribe and manage medication.
That prescribing ability is the core distinction. Both are legitimate mental-health professionals; they simply do different jobs, and understanding that stops people from booking the wrong kind of appointment for what they need.
